Bits & Pieces: Kari Herer Photography

1. Let’s talk a little more about Kari Herer, shall we? While I already featured her hybrid illustration-photographic pieces in yesterday’s post, the floral-ink combinations I chose to show yesterday only scratch the surface of her enchanting photography. Usually, I’m not a fan of floral arrangements–they’re fussy, with an ornateness that doesn’t fit into my normal aesthetic. However, Kari Herer’s styling intrigues me in a way the average bouquet doesn’t: the hint of chiaroscuro in her still life pieces, the soft suggestion of spring in her photos of Parisian flower markets, and the light-filled magic present in her illustrations are all intriguing in a way that still life works and arranged flowers rarely are.

2. I’m not, and have never been, a camper or a festival-goer. I’m too fond of warm showers every morning, too averse to large and rowdy crowds, to really enjoy spending a few days in the woods or desert surrounded by strangers. Free People’s SS 2012 collection almost has me rethinking my dislike of festivals and flat out ban on camping, because when else am I going to be able to use body paint and Cath Kidston tents?
